  Context:
Mark Strama’s 2004 campaign to oust incumbent Jack Stick was one of the most watched campaigns in Texas.  The Texas Democrats hadn’t picked up a seat in over 20 years, and with the Tom DeLay scandals stealing the headlines, the party turned to Strama for a potential pick-up.

Our Work:
Since the North Austin district leans Republican, we employed sophisticated targeting methods to determine small pockets of sympathetic voters that folded into a well-organized field operation. This campaign required attention not only to the growing minority population, but finding, registering, and bringing to the polls groups of voters that polling showed would support our candidate even though they may not support national Democratic candidates.

Results:
The mail campaign helped introduce the first-time candidate to voters while also striking at the portions of our opponent’s base that were soft. Strama won the election by less than 2% and helped ensure the Texas Democrats one additional seat in the State House.
